Health Assistant

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent
  2. Post-secondary education in job related topics preferred
  3. Eligible for a New Mexico Instructional Assistant's License
  4. Current Red Cross First-Aid certification or equivalent and CPR certification or a willingness to obtain these certifications
  5. Effective written and verbal communication skills

OVERVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION: To assist in the school health program. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Follow local, state and federal law and adhere to Public Education Department and Local School Board Policy.
  2. Maintain confidentiality of information, builds and maintain sound working relationships with school personnel and the community.
  3. Assist in maintaining school health records system.
  4. Administer first aid for injuries and illnesses.
  5. Assist with screening tests and make routine referrals.
  6. Make appropriate referrals to the school nurse for follow-up of student health problems including medical or dental exams.
  7. Carry out routine office procedures.
  8. Assist with immunization records and recording on health records.
  9. Perform nursing tasks as delegated by the school nurse.
  10. May supervise students in self-administration of medications.
  11. Arrange for proper care of ill students, including notification of parents, if necessary.
  12. Assist in non-instructional duties, including but not limited to hall, lunchroom, and grounds monitoring as directed.
  13. Perform other relevant tasks as assigned.

REPORTS TO: Principal

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year to be in accordance with current schedule for 189-day employees. Salary to be determined by individual training and experience level on current Assistant Paraprofessional Salary Schedule.

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.

 

PHYSICAL LEVEL RATING: This position will require the employee to function at a "medium" physical capacity as defined by Workman's Compensation statutes. "Medium" physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
