POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Registered School Nurse
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered Nurse: Licensed to practice in New Mexico
- Associate’s degree in nursing or diploma nursing program graduate from a regionally accredited college, university or institution accredited by the National League of Nursing
- Nursing experience – Two (2) or more years of relevant practice as a Registered Nurse
OVERVIEW OF JOB DESCRIPTION: To utilize the principles of health and education to promote a climate of health and well-being for each student in the district schools.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow local, state and federal law and adhere to Public Education Department, Local School Board Policy, NM Department of Health and NM Board of Nursing regulations.
- Provide school health services to students including health screening, first aid and emergency treatment.
- Maintain confidential school health records and adheres to FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
- Provide initial care for a student or staff member who has become ill or injured at school.
- Communicate with parents concerning their children’s health issues.
- Communicate with teachers on relevant student health issues.
- Follow physician orders for medication administration, treatments and nursing procedures for students.
- Authorize exclusions and readmission of students with infectious/contagious diseases. Notify Public Health Department in accordance with state law.
- Coordinate with planning of duties for health assistants (UAP: unlicensed assistive personnel)
- Maintain health and first aid centers in assigned schools. Assure that kits with first aid supplies are available to take to the scene of an emergency.
- Participate with school staff in developing and implementing school health programs.
- Establish with school site administrator the emergency plan for health services when the school nurse is absent.
- Chairperson for the Code Blue Team.
- Complete forms for employee and student accident claims and turns them in to site supervisor for signature and routing within required timeframe.
- Perform other relevant task as assigned.
REPORTS TO: Principal and Special Services Administrators
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year will be in accordance with current schedule for 191-day employees. Salary will be determined by individual training and experience level on the appropriate Salary Schedule. Nurses without a Bachelor’s degree will be on current RN Salary Schedule.
EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position will require the employee to function at a “medium” physical capacity as defined by Workman’s Compensation statutes. “Medium” physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
